In 1957, a film came out that made a big difference in Indian cinema. It was called “Mother India,” and it gave India a chance at the Oscars. This movie was one of the final nominees in the 1958 Academy Awards in the Best Foreign Language Film category.
A Star and a Message
“Mother India” was not just any film; it was a game-changer. It showed that a movie led by a female actor could be a huge success at the box office. Nargis was the star, and she was supported by Sunil Dutt, Rajendra Kumar, and Raajkumar. But, Nargis was the one who carried the film strongly, and it became a historic box office hit.
Big Success
When “Mother India” came out in 1957, it was the most successful film of the year. Mehboob Khan directed it, and it made 4.5 crore at the box office. If we adjust this amount for inflation, it might be anywhere between 1700 – 2100 crore today! Yes, you read that right. This film, made on a small budget, was a blockbuster.
In fact, Nargis became the first female superstar to lead a film to such box office success. “Mother India” was said to have been made on a budget of around 60 lakh, but it collected 4.5 crore. The film even opened with just 1 lakh on its release day.
A Long Journey to Success
It wasn’t easy for “Mother India” to reach 4.5 crore starting from just 1 lakh. It was a long journey, but the film finally became the highest-grossing film of that year.
Global Impact
“Mother India” made waves not just in India but around the world. It created a lot of buzz and collected about 8 – 9 crore at the global box office. It was released on October 25, 1957, on Diwali, and ran in theaters for a whole year. It’s still one of the highest-grossing films to date!
A Legendary Status
Over the years, “Mother India” became legendary. Surprisingly, no actress, from Kangana Ranaut to Deepika Padukone, Alia Bhatt to Vidya Balan, has been able to beat its lifetime business of around 2000 crore when adjusted for inflation. Even past stars like Sridevi and Madhuri Dixit, who were considered box office successes, couldn’t match Nargis’s achievement with “Mother India.”
