Padma Awards 2024 Winners List: Every year on Republic Day, the Indian government gives out special awards called the Padma Awards to people who have done really well in different areas, helping the country grow. Before Republic Day 2024, the government shared the names of people getting Padma Shri Awards on Thursday, January 25. One of the winners is Parbati Baruah, who became the first woman in India to be an elephant mahout. She broke stereotypes to make a place for herself in a job mostly done by men.

Another awardee is Chami Murmu, a tribal environmentalist, who planted more than 30 lakh plants and helped 30,000 women through Self-Help Groups (SHGs). Gurvinder Singh, a social worker from Sirsa, is also on the list. He worked to improve the lives of homeless, destitute, women, orphans, and people with disabilities.

The list includes K Chellammal, an organic farmer from South Andaman, Uday Vishwanath Deshpande, an international Mallakhamb coach, and Yazdi Maneksha Italia, a well-known microbiologist who played a key role in starting India’s Sickle Cell Anemia Control Program. There’s also Machihan Sasa from Ukhrul, a Longpi potter who spent five decades preserving this ancient Manipuri pottery, which goes back to the Neolithic period (10,000 BC).

  • Prema Dhanraj: Burn victim turned burn surgeon, dedicating her life to the cause of burn victims.

Cultural and Artistic Contributions:

  • Uday Vishwanath Deshpande: Flagbearer of Mallakhamb, credited for bringing the traditional sport to the global stage.
  • Yazdi Maneksha Italia: Doctor fighting sickle cell anemia among Tribals in Gujarat.

  • Shanti Devi Paswan & Shivan Paswan: Duo Godna painters overcoming social stigmas to become prominent faces in Madhubani painting globally.

  • Badrappan M: 87-year-old Valli Oyil Kummi Dance guru, breaking from tradition to also train women.
  • Jordan Lepcha: Bamboo craftsperson preserving the traditional Lepcha hats of Sikkim.
  • Machihan Sasa: Master craftsperson promoting and preserving the ancient Manipuri tradition of Longpi pottery.
  • Gaddam Sammaiah: Highlighted social issues through Chindu Yakshaganam performances for over five decades.
  • Jankilal: Third-generation performer mastering the fading Behrupiya art for over six decades.
  • Dasari Kondappa: One of the last Burra veena players, dedicating his life to the indigenous art.
  • Babu Ram Yadav: Brass craftsperson championing the intricate brass marori craft globally for the past six decades.
  • Nepal Chandra Sutradhar: One of the last and senior-most practitioners of Purulia style dance and maskmaking of the age-old Chhau tradition.
